Timehop

May 6, 2017Michael Oldham

It’s early May, and this is only my fourth post of the year. That gives some indication of how busy life has become trying to balance work, life and a soon-to-be-one-year-old baby boy.

Timehop

It reminds me of an app I have on my phone called Timehop. The app basically provides you with a snapshot from your social media accounts from the past, to let you see what you were doing on this day a year ago, two years ago, three years ago and so on. I’m sure you’re aware of it.

Well, that’s more or less how life feels when I return from any time I spend away from him. In the past couple of months I have been on a few work trips, as well as a weekend away with friends. On each occasion when I come back, the progress and changes i’ve noticed make it feel like a mini Timehop.

Teeth

He’s got a little set of teeth at the front of his mouth now as you can see; two on the bottom, and (weirdly) three on the top. His grin has become even more hilarious than before – although when you’re half asleep and feel them sink in to your cheek at 05:00 in the morning, it’s not quite as funny.

Bronchiolitis

On a not-so-funny note, the timehop has also seen Marley battle with a fairly intense bout of coughing and chest problems that’s been attributed to several long words ending in ‘-itis’ (bronchialitis, gastroentiritis etc)

High temperatures, some proper distress and a spectacular vomiting episode in the doctors waiting room (that required them to put down FOUR wet floor signs!) led one doctor to mention one particular word – meningitis – which was particularly worrying. Thankfully, he’s back to full health now and is shrieking as loud as ever.

Speaking of which, communication has become one of his main priorities. He has been developing his “bababa” sound to more of a “mamama”, although he hasn’t actually properly said his first words yet. He’s been sharing his food with me, touching my nose when I say “nose nose” and learning how to wave, too. I don’t think his first word is too far away.

“Come on Marley, say Dada!!”

Bum shuffle

Finally, he is bum-shuffling his way around now too, and I’d say he is just about ready to crawl. That means it won’t be long before he is standing up and taking his first steps. We haven’t baby-proofed the house, so we’re nowhere near ready for that yet.

But, let’s be honest, we’ve not really been ready for any of it, and we’ve managed OK so far – so bring it on Marley!

Until then, i’m keeping a close eye on him!
